Engine Tuning & 750 Motor Club Pre-Season Test

Date: March 11, 2024

With less than a month to go before the first race of the season at Donnington there was a club organised pre-season test scheduled at Snetterton.

The day before the test I had the car booked in for an engine tune, some would say this was leaving things a bit late and I would agree with them in hindsight!

But hindsight is always 20:20

Needless to say the rolling road session didn't go well, I had messed up some of the parts of the engine installation and therefore the engine couldn't be tuned.

I still went to Snetterton as it was a great opportunity to get the car in front of the scrutineers to get a final checklist before race 1.

I was prepared for the worst given the previous day at the rolling road but they only came back to me with a few minor adjustments and the addition of an oil catch can (yes if I'd read the rules I would have seen this). Quite a good day in the end even if I didn't manage to get out on track!

Having sorted the installation issues with the engine I got the car booked back in at the rolling road for its tune and the figures weren't the best sadly.

The series I'm destined for is the 750 Motor Club Sports Specials championship which has 3 different classes in the races. Class A & B goverend by power to weight ratio and Class C specifically for the MEV Exocet car.

Class B was where I was looking to go and I thought that with my car I would be easily competitive but the stats don't lie. The car weight 749Kg with the driver included and the power output of the engine was a measly 158bhp.

This left me with a power to weight ratio of 250bhp/tonne...

The limit for Class B in the sports specials is 280bup/tonne so I was a long way off!

Still, it was my first season and the year to find my feet, work out how it all works and get to know my competitors and the car. I wasn't dreaming of any first season glory shots and being picked up by a spy from an F1 team looking for some hidden talent to swap into their championship winning car!

I was just happy to be there fulfilling a childhood dream!
